Devil Rock

Devil Rock is an ancient rock formation which features in Aboriginal legend. The rock is situated near the Old Reservoir three kilometers north of the mining town of Cobar in New South Wales. For many decades Cobar had no permanent water supply, although an area called the "Old Reservoir", was Cobar's first water supply. Due to the sporadic nature of rain, lack of water was a big problem for Cobar residents for many years. Water was delivered to Cobar residents by train up until the 1960's when the pipeline from Nyngan was completed. Today the "Old Reservoir" is used for recreation and water sports.

The local Aboriginals believe that Devil Rock is an evil place. It was here that the Ngemba people carried out their ceremonial rites. Access to Devil's Rock is via a 1 kilometre walking track from the "Old Reservoir". A large variety or bird-life and wild-life can be observed in this area.

It is a eerie place to visit in the early morning and I can well imagine what the rock looks like on a clear moonlight night. Maybe next time I will attempt to capture it on such a night. Well maybe.
